Pokimane, a well-known titan of Twitch streaming, has teamed up with Intel Inspires and AVGL to pay for college tuition for a handful of lucky gamers. For a chance to win one of the ten $10,000 scholarships, prospective gamers must apply through the AVGL website.
"I know how difficult it is to manage classes + gaming," Pokimane said on her Twitter page. In support of gamers who have come from underprivileged backgrounds, the Twitch streamer has set up a scheme that will give $100,000 split between ten lucky winners. In order to apply for one of the scholarships, prospective students must submit a 1-2 minute video highlighting and explaining their background within gaming and their goals as a gamer. This competition is only open to those studying in the US or Canada, but various levels of education are accepted, so long as the applicant is planning on attending college in the Fall of 2022. This includes high school juniors, seniors, college enrollees and graduate students.
The scholarships are funded by both AVGL and Pokimane herself, with each participant giving $50,000 respectively to create the $100,000 scholarship fund. The scholarship and its distribution will be managed by Scholarship America, and it is one of many eSports scholarships or varsity programs. The opportunity is available until Dec 31, 2021.
Pokimane has been praised by members of the streaming community and other popular streamers for her involvement in this scholarship. AriaSaki, Dr Disrespect and QuarterJade responded to Pokimane's Twitter post, praising their fellow content creator for "giving back" to her fans. AVGL also praised the streamer on the application page for the scholarships, citing her streams as a place to have a "positive, supporting experience."
This is not the first time Pokimane has made the news. Earlier this week, she made the news for calling out an overly-obsessed fan, who had taken extreme measures to spam Pokimane's Twitch chat with invasive questions about the streamer and her friends. Last month, Pokimane was announced to be the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of RTS. Backed by Endeavor, RTS aims to "fix" the gaming and esports industry, focusing on the creator business model, brand deals, and esports strategies. This move was highlighted by Pokimane as the "biggest announcement of [her] career."
With Twitch reporting over two billion watch hours in October alone, it is a platform with a clear amount of power, and its biggest streamers share somewhat in that power. Through her funds and influence, Pokimane has given her fans the chance to support their educations and take their learning to the next level. While $10,000 is not enough to pay for a full college tuition, it is certainly a large amount of money and something that can support anyone in the pursuit of their educational goals.
