As The Batman edges closer to its premiere date next year, new details about the film are bound to emerge even past the movie’s second trailer. The latest of these includes a new synopsis that says a lot about Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.

It’s been a known fact for a while that Matt Reeves’ The Batman draws inspiration from the Year One and The Long Halloween comic book storylines, thus placing this Batman in his sophomore year of crime-fighting action in Gotham. In that context, the handpicked foes from Batman’s rogues’ gallery this time around will be The Riddler as the main villain, as well as The Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Selina Kyle also joining the fight.

The new description places further emphasis on Batman’s struggles to navigate Gotham’s network of corruption and how the World’s Greatest Detective's latest mission leads him to hunt down The Riddler. The usage of Wayne’s detective moniker seems fitting judging from The Batman trailers that show the Caped Crusader is not willing to back down in his fight against crime, despite having to seek new alliances to succeed. Check out the full transcript:

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city's corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham's elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World's Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City."

The Riddler is the Zodiac Killer in The Batman

This Zodiac-inspired Riddler is earmarked as the movie’s villain, which falls perfectly in line with the desire to bring out Batman’s more detective-esque qualities while not falling short in the sheer amount of brutal beatdowns he’s dishing out to criminals. For that reason, the “It’s not a call… It’s a warning” motto that sticks out from the trailer could very well sum up The Batman's overall themes in a newly imagined Gotham.

One thing to highlight here is that Batman will have to go deep inside the criminal underworld this time around, which might explain The Penguin and Falcone’s involvement. As part of that, this Year Two Batman will also have to get involved with Selina, which might cement the roots of their conflictive relationship before she goes to fully assume the Catwoman identity.

Naturally, this younger Batman also comes bundled with a new take on some of his allies such as Alfred Pennyworth and Commissioner Gordon, with the entire cast being featured on the early LEGO sets that have been posted online and included minor teases of some of the film's key scenes. Still, all the promotional material shared up to this point clearly has The Riddler a the star of the show, perhaps signaling that this portrayal could be looking to equal what was accomplished with the late Heath Ledger's Joker.

The Batman will be released exclusively in theaters on March 4, 2022.
